Does Your Home Need New Doors?

There could be many reasons to upgrade your home’s doors. From improving security to adding insulation, below are some of the biggest perks of adding new doors to your home.

Improve your home’s security

If your doors are old or damaged, it’s possible that they may not be very secure. A burglar may be able to easily force entry. By upgrading to new doors, you could prevent this.

Just what are some signs that your current door may not be secure enough? If it’s visibly warped or hanging from its hinges, it could be worth replacing. You also want to consider the material - exterior doors made from poor quality uPVC or single paned glass can usually be easily broken into.

You should also consider the quality of the locks. If you’ve got an old exterior door that doesn’t have a mortice lock or deadlock, it may be worth installing a new door with these locks or replacing the current old locks.

There are many features that you can add to a door to make it more secure without having to replace it. Video doorbells and motion sensing lighting can help to deter burglars. You can also install a burglar alarm.

Keep out drafts

You may also want to consider replacing your door if it’s letting drafts in. On top of letting cold air in, such doors could be noisy in windy weather.

Drafts are usually the results of a poorly-fitted door. Many old doors have gaps between the door and the frame. There could also be a large gap at the top or bottom of the door. Damaged weatherstripping could also allow drafts in.

Consider buying a new door with a weatherproof seal that helps to keep out drafts. Alternatively, you may be able to install a weatherproof seal onto your existing door.

Stop heat escaping

Some doors provide little insulation. This allows heat to be lost through the door.

Heat can be lost through gaps around the door or through the door itself. Thin solid wood doors and single-glazed glass doors are big culprits for this. Consider upgrading to another material like composite wood or aluminium. Fiberglass doors are some of the most energy-efficient options.

Got an old door that you want to preserve? You may be able to make it more energy-efficient simply by adding weatherstrips. It may also be possible to add an insulating material on the inside.

Let in more light

Most doors are opaque, however some contain glass. Glass doors can help to let light through, making your home brighter. Consider whether there are any rooms in your home that could benefit from glass doors.

For example, a gloomy hallway could be brightened up by adding a glass front door. Such doors can use frosted glass to add privacy. It’s worth using double or triple glazing to add security and insulation.

For letting in lots of light, it could be worth installing some glass sliding doors such as these Renewal by Andersen patio doors. These are ideal for rooms facing into your backyard. Make sure that these doors are high quality so that they also provide insulation and security.

Glass is typically added to exterior doors, but you can also add glass to interior doors. This can help to allow light into rooms that have few or no windows (such as a dining room leading out of a kitchen). Borrowed lights are another option, which involves placing a window pane above a door.

Step up your curb appeal

New doors could be worth installing simply as a way of improving your home’s curb appeal.

If you’ve got an old or basic front door, you could consider upgrading it to something more flashy to help turn heads. Brightly colored doors are popular for this reason - they’re dramatic and will make people notice your home. Alternatively, you could look into ornate designs including things like stained glass or elegant panels.

If you’ve got a period door, you should probably preserve it, as this feature can be attractive and will add value. Other unique door features like original brass knockers or quirky glass cut-outs could also add value.

On top of upgrading exterior doors, you could also consider upgrading interior doors. This could be worthwhile if your current interior doors are all old and worn. Upgrading them could add value and make your home more attractive to buyers if you’re thinking of selling in the near future. Even upgrading the handles could have an impact.
