How to: Self-Care

Here we go, another one of my conventional how-to's, except for this month, it's all about you. I ended up researching this a bit last year amid pandemic (yes, I googled how to self-care!) and was inspired by the answers that I kinda came up with my own based on what worked for me. This is definitely not a one-size-fits-all, so do alter it in any way desirable!

1. Change your Scenery
  • Whether that means exploring the city you live in or taking a drive (or flight!) to a nearby one. Explore what they have to offer and step out of your comfort zone. Look up typical "things to do" and try something new!
2. Buy Yourself Flowers
  • I believe in doing this any chance you get! My favorite thing to do is to buy myself a new plant at my local nursery, or maybe on your next Trader Joe's run, pick up some lovely flowers with your groceries; they have a great selection at affordable prices.

3. Enjoy a Meal by Yourself
  • If you're like me, you're probably terrified of walking into a restaurant and saying "just me" for dining in. However, I highly suggest overcoming this fear as it's now nearing one of my favorite things to do. It's peaceful to sit back and devour your food in your own company. It's almost an indescribable feeling yet relaxing in itself.
4. Buy an Item You've Been Longing
  • You don't have to tell me twice! To make it extra special, when purchasing your item, select the "make it a gift" option to include some special wrapping or a thank you note card from yourself, so when it shows up, you can pretend to be surprised.

5. Read a Book

  • How many of us can admit that we still read (when we're not supposed to)? I love visiting bookstores and checking out new releases or even picking up an old classic to pass the time. When it's an especially good read, you won't realize how much time has passed that you've been enjoying yourself.

6. Take a Break from Your Phone/Social Media

  • Probably one of the most important and biggest stress relievers of all! You won't believe how consumed we are with our phones and social media until you put it away. Whether you're taking a few hours, a day, or however long you need to unwind from the internet chaos would be such a relief once completed.
As I'm typing this, I'm actually planning a self-care day for myself this month because it's well long overdue. Remember to put yourself first, take some time off work, and breathe. Everything will be in place once you return. We only have one timeline on this earth, so don't miss it.
